Route Planner — a web app that becomes an app
The route planner we built for people who move outdoors: road cycling, gravel, MTB, running, trail and hiking. One codebase that is a website, an app you install from the browser and an Android app.
The challenge
Whoever plans a ride wants to know before leaving whether they can make it: the real gradient, the climbing, the surface. And they want it on their phone, often in the mountains with poor coverage.
The usual roads are two: a native app per platform, with two projects to maintain and the stores reviewing every update, or a website that stays a website on the phone. We wanted the convenience of the first with a single codebase.
What we did
We built a single web app. The engine draws the route by sport and preference, direct or scenic, reads the gradient metre by metre, joins the stages of a multi-day trip and exports the GPX. On top sit the stories and events its users publish, with a preview that shows the route's map when they are shared in a chat.
The same web app installs from the browser as a PWA, with its own icon on the home screen, and becomes a real Android app through a TWA (Trusted Web Activity): a signed package that opens the site full screen, with no address bar, because the domain declares that it recognises the app's signature. What changes on the site reaches the app at once.
How it gets found now
One codebase, three ways to use it: in the browser, from the home screen, as an Android app. The app is downloaded signed straight from the site, with its SHA-256 fingerprint to check before installing. The site is in Italian and English, with pages written for the searches of people planning a ride.
It is live: route.huntlog.xyz.
